Questions and Answers

Q: When is the best time to sod?

A: Early spring or early fall. In the spring the temperatures are mild, the rain helps with the establishment of the sod. The freshly installed sod requires daily watering for the first two weeks. The sod will be ready to be walked on usually within 30 days. In the fall is also a good time to sod. Just make sure the sod has plenty of time to rest in the ground before the frost comes.

Q: What is hydro seeding?

A: Hydro seeding (or hydraulic mulch seeding, hydro-mulching, hydra seeding) is a planting process that uses a slurry of seed and mulch. It is often used as an erosion control technique on construction sites, as an alternative to the traditional process of broadcasting or sowing dry seed.

Q: What is lawn aeration?

A: Lawn aeration allows air, water, and nutrients to penetrate the grass roots, helps roots grow deeper, and produce a stronger, more vigorous lawn.

Q: What is a soil test?

A: A soil test is the analysis of a soil to determine nutrient and soil content, composition, and other characteristics such as the acid or pH level. A soil test can determine how fertile the soil is, or the expected growth potential of the soil which indicates nutrient deficiencies, potential toxicities from excessive fertility, and inhibitions from the presence of non-essential trace minerals. The test is used to mimic the function of roots to assimilate minerals.

Q: How often should I water my lawn?

A: Water wisely. An established lawn needs about 1 inch of water per week in the growing season. A light daily watering will encourage shallow root systems. Instead, water thourghly once a week, using a 1-inch deep empty tuna can as a makeshift measuring device. Early morning is best, say before 8 am., when evaporation rates are low and more water is absorbed into the soil. Anytime of day or night is okay to water but the most economical time is in the morning or evening.
